Corona special fund: 15 million euros for building a modern university cloud

03.11.2022 -

The IT infrastructure of the seven state universities in Saxony-Anhalt is to be strengthened and made crisis-proof with support from the state's Corona Special Fund. To this end, a university cloud is to be established by 2026, which will increase stability in times of pandemics and provide improved protection against cyber attacks.

State Secretary for Science Thomas Wünsch and State Secretary in the Ministry for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs as well as State Commissioner for Information Technology Bernd Schlömer handed over the allocation of 15 million euros for this purpose to the Rector of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Prof. Dr. Jens Strackeljan, on November 03, 2022.

Part of the expansion of the IT infrastructure is CDS member and Chairman of the IT Commission of the State Rectors' Conference Prof. Dr. Andreas Nürnberger. The latter explained that the cooperation between the universities would result in greater security and crisis protection. Through the cooperation, IT services are to be made available reciprocally, predominantly "open source"-based and with powerful cross-university user authentication. In the future, it should also be possible to move IT services between the universities, so that the failure of a computer center can be compensated.
