Pioneering research in data-driven materials science

25.10.2024 -

The BiGmax research network has investigated how data-driven approaches can be used to achieve breakthroughs in the discovery of new materials. These breakthroughs are essential for new scientific developments based on renewable energies and carbon-neutral industrial circular processes.

The findings of the MaxNet on Big-Data-Driven Materials Science (BiGmax, 2017-2023) laid the foundation for further developments. Instead of simply summarizing their achievements, the researchers developed a "Roadmap on Data-Centric Materials Science," which was published in the journal Modelling and Simulation in Materials Science and Engineering. The BiGmax network was led by CDS member Prof. Peter Benner , Director at the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg, and Prof. Matthias Scheffler from the Fritz Haber Institute of the MPG.

“It is now widely recognized that many breakthroughs in the discovery of new materials are necessary, especially for sustainable economic development based on renewable energies and carbon-neutral industrial circular processes. In BiGmax, we investigated how data-driven approaches can be used for such breakthroughs, and in the ‘Roadmap’ we show ways in which this can be achieved in future work ,” says Prof. Peter Benner
