IQ Innovation Prize Magdeburg “Otto von Guericke Award”

The current winner of the IQ Innovation Prize Magdeburg "Otto von Guericke Award" is the Chair of Thermodynamics and Combustion (LTV) at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. CDS member Prof. Dr. Frank Beyrau, Prof. Dr. Eckehard Specht, and Alexey Kropman were honored for the development of a novel reactor that prepares CO2-intensive industries for climate targets.

The production of materials for the construction of wind turbines and green power plants generates huge amounts of CO2. The raw material lime, in particular, leaves behind large amounts of CO2 during production. This is needed to produce cement and steel, which are essential for the entire industry. Since the greenhouse gas occurs naturally in lime, its release during processing cannot be prevented. Prof. Dr. Eckehard Specht and Prof. Dr. Frank Beyrau have now found an energy-saving solution to this problem with the fixed-bed reactor. The CO2 is separated from the other exhaust gases using heat generated by the compression of the exhaust gases and can then be stored. The system is also suitable for the cement and steel industries, which could otherwise only become climate-neutral with completely new production processes.

Anyone who submits an innovation to one of the five competition clusters and is based in the Magdeburg economic area, i.e., the state capital of Magdeburg or one of the neighboring districts (Börde, Jerichower Land, Salzlandkreis), is eligible to participate in the IQ Innovation Prize Magdeburg "Otto von Guericke Award." The award winners receive €5,000 in prize money from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.
