Mathematical Optimization and Machine Learning: Prof. Sebastian Sager Researches as Max Planck Fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute Magdeburg

26.09.2023 -

CDS member Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Sebastian Sager has been appointed Max Planck Fellow. The mathematician and professor at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg will take over the leadership of the research group "Mathematical Optimization and Machine Learning" from the Max-Planck-Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg for five years starting October 1, 2023.

The focus of the research lies particularly on the application-driven development of methods of modeling, simulation, and optimization, for example in chemical production and algorithmics. "In this context, these are intended to influence each other: mathematical research is driven by the complex engineering issues related to circular economy, for example. At the same time, mathematical results in the form of more efficient and robust algorithms often lead to breakthroughs in engineering. With new algorithms, calculations can be performed faster without losing accuracy and reliability. In this way, completely new technical processes can be tested for their potential," says Sebastian Sager, summarizing the goals and content of the research. Sebastian Sager himself focuses on mixed-integer nonlinear optimization. "The mathematical pillar of the MPI will be further strengthened and already existing collaborations of Prof. Sager with numerous groups of our institute will be intensified, for example in chemical process engineering. But also future cooperation with groups researching issues in bioprocess technology or electrochemical energy conversion is well conceivable due to the high relevance of mathematical optimization," said Prof. Sundmacher and Prof. Sager.

Sebastian Sager, 48, was born in Westerstede. After graduating from high school, he studied mathematics and earned his doctorate and habilitation at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing at the University of Heidelberg. In 2012, he was appointed professor at the Faculty of Mathematics at Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg.

The Max Planck Fellow-Program promotes the collaboration of outstanding university teachers with scientists of the Max-Planck-Society.
