Research for carbon sources of the future
Scientists of the der Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg are working on the development of new approaches and processes for sustainable carbon-based chemical production as a port of the research cluster SmartProSys (Smart Process Systems for a Green Carbon-based Chemical Production in a Sustainable Society).
Fossil raw materials are to be replaced with renewable carbon sources and energy-intensive process chains transformed into completely closed cycles. Scientists from the field of process engineering, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, logistics, political science and psychology are involved in the SmartProSys research cluster. „The chemical industry, not just in Saxony-Anhalt, is undergoing profound structural change,” says CDS Member and speaker of the research cluster, Prof. Dr. -Ing. Kai Sundmacher from the Chair of process engineering at the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg. „The industry accounts for about ten per cent global CO2 emissions worldwide. In order to achieve the climate targets, emissions must be reduced to zero by 2045. We want to research the foundations of a new generation of process technologies required to achieve this." The conversion of plastic waste and biogenic residue and waste materials into valuable molecules for new products is of particular importance.
The Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, the Max-Planck-Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg, the Leibniz-Institute for Catalysis in Rostock und die Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus are involved in the SmartProSys initiative. The spokespeople are the two CDS Members Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai Sundmacher, Chair of Systems Process Engineering, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Achim Kienle, Chair of Automation Technology and Modelling, and Prof. Dr. Ellen Matthies, Chair of Environmental Psychology. With the SmartProSys initiative and two other research clusters, the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg is participating in the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state government.
