Digital twins in Power-to-X technologies for improving conversion processes of renewable energies

30.09.2024 -

In Power-to-X (PtX) technologies, digital twins operate reactors autonomously, storing renewable energy by converting it into chemical fuels.

The digital twins connect a physical plant bi-directionally with a real-time simulation. They enable safer, more efficient and more sustainable operation, which is particularly important in offshore scenarios due to constantly fluctuating conditions.

The Computational Methods in Systems and Control Theory (CSC) group, led by CDS member Prof. Dr. Peter Benner, is researching the improvement of digital twins for PtX processes in collaboration with the Process Systems Engineering (PSE) group, led by CDS member Prof. Dr. Kai Sundmacher. The scientists are working together as part of the SmartProSys excellence initiative. Instead of  conventional models  based on physical principles surrogate models are used. In comparison they are faster, generate lower computing costs and enable effective reactor management even under fluctuating power conditions.

To the official press release of the research cluster SmartProSys.
